Somers Point, which was originally known as Somerset Plantation dating back to the late 17th century,
is a small bayside community consisting of 4 square miles. It became a borough in 1886.
Today it is a thriving city and is the portal
to Ocean City, with its great beaches and fun
boardwalk. A new 4 lane bridge is in the works to repair and replace
the bridge that links these two cities. Longport is also
linked to Somers Point on its north side....and from there you have
access to Atlantic City with its nightlife and casinos, Atlantic City is 7 miles
from Somers Point.
Somers Point is situated on the Great Egg Harbor Bay (named because of the large number of bird eggs found
by early explorers) and because of this location, vacationers
and residents can enjoy a variety of water activities.
Boating,
fishing and water skiing are the among the favorites. Additional
attractions include Kennedy Park overlooking the bay, public boat ramps, boat rentals,
docks, excursions etc all along the coast. Most residents and vacationers usually swim in Ocean City
which is just across the bridge. However, Somers Point does have a
protected beach. Speaking of bridges, there are three bridges that
connect Somers Point to other resorts and municipalities.
There are numerous activities for all
as Somers Point has great recreational facilities. There are 8
baseball/softball fields, 1 football field, 2 street hockey courts,
various basketball and tennis courts and best of all a bicycle path
that runs the full length of this city. There are also many other
activities to enjoy - theaters, movies,
shopping and
fabulous
restaurants.
You can check out
golf courses in the area plus there are privately
owned golf courses, swimming and tennis clubs available to its
members in this city.
Somers Point is a year round
community and boasts one of the finest school districts in the area.
It is home to a great medical community with its center point being
Shore Memorial Hospital. Somers Point was recently recognized as the
"best" place to live in Eastern United States.
There is also great entertainment
throughout the spring and summer season. One of the best
is the
Bay Fest in the Spring. There are concerts to enjoy on the beach throughout
the summer and Good Old Days Picnic in September. The many fine restaurants
offer dining, drinking and great music to keep the Point open year ‘round.
These restaurants and nightclubs have promoted the area as a popular,
chic residential neighborhood community with fine
schools
and public services.
The
Point’s enhanced Historic Bay District has turned the area into a
waterfront gem that’s unique to the Jersey Shore and beneficial to
both business and residents alike.
While Somers Point continues to grow and change with the times,
it still retains the simple grace, classic character and “Small
town charm on the bay” that makes it so appealing to residents
and visitors alike.
